More About the Ramsey Island Experience
Owned by the RSPB and operated as a nature reserve, Ramsey Island is a wonderful haven for many different seabirds. Birdwatchers will be in their element, enjoying the antics of a variety of birds at close quarters, including guillemots, razorbills, peregrine falcons, kittywakes, choughs, Manx shearwaters, cormorants, shags, fulmars, oystercatchers and auks amongst many others.
The island is home to the largest colony of Atlantic grey seals in southern Britain and, on our boat trips, you will see lots of them in the island's many bays and caves. Porpoises often come close to the boat, particularly in the turbulent waters between the east side of Ramsey and the mainland, where they take advantage of the choppy waters to catch smaller fish while the tide is on its way in or out. Dolphins are occasional visitors in the summer when the waters are warm.
Ramsey Island’s unusual geology has produced a stunning island of rocky hills and heather moorland, with spectacular cliffs., making it the perfect home for a variety of species and a spectacular sight that you’ll never forget.

Excellent trip in a skiff around Ramsey Island. There were four of us in the semi rigid inflatable boat. Mark and Sue who managed the boat were obviously very... read more knowledgeably. You may need to think twice about doing this if you are an elderly person because getting in and out of the boat can be quite hard.

There are several boat trips around Ramsey Island but we’d recommend this one. All seem similar. High speed ridge boat, you straddle a narrow padded bench two to a seat... read more so you can hug your wife or children as the boat crashes down off a wave. It’s great fun, very safe but with the edge of being on a speed boat at sea. Crew very friendly, take you all round the island, pointing out interesting parts, driving into bays to see seals and their pups. There was a couple with very young children/toddlers but personally I would not take a child under 5/6 especially in rough seas as you do need to hold on. Great fun though.

We managed to get a trip without prior booking ( probably not recommended if you want a specific day or time) Friendly company and we could leave our car in... read more free car park and taken by mini bus to the boat. You sit astride on the seats and the boat goes fast!! We went round Ramsey Island £ 28 per adult and it was great to go around this island and go into caves, see the nesting birds and seals. Obviously there’s no guarantee you will see anything! The water was beautifully clear and so also saw some jellyfish! It was a fun quick hour - enough for me as I’m not great on long boat trips!! …

Despite a grey day the trip was amazing, we loved the rib ride and enjoyed the informative information given by our very knowledgable guide. We saw seals and some pups,... read more amazing rock formations, an extinct volcano and some very interesting birds. We also witnessed a rip tide which was a real spectacle.
Well worth the money
One thing to note, the trips were advertised for all ages, getting down to the boat involves lots of steep steps and getting on to the rib requires a good level of mobility. As you are required to site astride the seats you need to be able to get your leg up and over in a fairly small space.

It was a good trip from start to finish. The booking was straight forward , paying contactless , no app downloading ! Nice lady at the ticket office. Temperature taken... read more and hand sanitizer. Social distance in minibus. Yes a minibus lift to the boat , not sure if the other boat trip companies offered that? The driver gave a little info about the local area. The boat was clean and life jackets given. The 70 minute ride was very scenic going round the ramsey island, seeing porpoises, baby seal pups, gannets and went into a cave. Do have to be quite fit though as alot of steps at the launch area and getting in and out of boat needs you to be agile. Reasonable price too compared with other companies.

We parked at the office in St Davids and chatted to Sue then were driven down to St Justinians by a very nice man whose name I can't remember. We... read more had Mark (skipper) and Eirlys (Snowdrop) in a 280 horsepower rib. Our trip left and returned on time. We had booked the entire boat privately because, having stayed in St Brides bay for over 20 yrs, we wanted to see things from the sea (and no one else wanted to book this trip I guess). Mark was a great skipper and very knowledgeable about the coats having been here since a boy. Eirlys was very knowledgeable about the history of the area, having been recently involved in an archaeological dig nearby; also really nice to chat with. Mark timed it all very well; we managed about half of the bay in 2 hours then blasted back across the flat-calm bay at high speed. A really lovely informative and exciting trip. We might do the other half of the bay next year.
Note: the rib is black rubber which can leave marks on light-coloured trousers when climbing in and out.

What a great experience! Our trip around Ramsey Island had everything, speed, wildlife, caves and geological information. The guide was extremely knowledgeable. Great being able to park... read more in St Davids and having a free shuttle back and too to the boat. We saw seals, both swimming in the water and saw females waiting to give birth on the beaches around the Island. We were lucky enough to see some newly born seal pups too. Our guide knew we may see porpoises because the gannets were circling above, a sign the porpoises were chasing fish to the surface of the water. He was so right!! We were lucky to see the porpoises. A great trip, I would highly recommend. …
